Durham's finest and most popular restaurants are not only known for great food and atmosphere, but also for the great artists and musicians they employ. Chances are high in downtown Durham that your favorite barista is an artist and your favorite bartender is in a rock band! For June 20 many of the staff wrangled a Friday night off to rock the CCB Plaza! Mark Cunningham (musician, artist and bartender at the Piedmont) muses how many nights of tending bar stirred up a desire for late night sing-a-longs and mixed in a few regulars with his other band mates to form the roots rock band, Midnight Gladness. A few blocks away at the Federal you will another great barkeep, Darrin Sink, front man for the pop-punk band Dry Heathens, whose new album, “First Contact with Ground,” is rocking the Bull City. And then there are The Backwaits, and they are literally back waits at the Piedmont. After they serve you the main course and clear your plate, husband and wife team Rob and Mara will serve up snappy synthetic-rock, playing pop gems from the 80’s and 90’s.
